Carl’s Jr. is taking aim at fast-food rival McDonald’s with the launch of its new Cali XL burger and a bold promotion called the “Sad Mac Buy Back.” The campaign invites customers to trade in proof of a McDonald’s burger purchase for a free Cali XL, a direct challenge to what it calls underwhelming options from competitors.
A Burger Swap With Bite
From November 12–21, customers can upload a photo of any McDonald’s burger receipt dated between January 1 and November 11, 2025 at carlsjr.com/sadmacbuyback. Those who qualify will receive a free Cali XL burger in their My Rewards account beginning November 22.
Key details include:
Free burger limit: 599 total redemptions nationwide
Eligibility: Must be a registered My Rewards member
Redemption: In the app, online, or in-restaurant by scanning a QR code
Offer not valid: With third-party delivery, combos, or other discounts
Paz Romero, vice president of brand at Carl’s Jr., said the promotion reflects what customers are asking for: “People want a burger that’s actually worth it. The ‘Sad Mac Buy Back’ is our way of letting guests swap disappointment for something better—no questions asked.”
Bigger Burger, Lower Price
The Cali XL, now available for a limited time, features:
Two 3.5-ounce charbroiled beef patties (7 ounces total pre-cooked weight)
Double American cheese, grilled onions, Classic Sauce, lettuce, and tomato
A seeded bun
Price: $5.99, with a combo meal for $2 more
According to the company, the burger offers double the beef of McDonald’s Big Mac, a claim verified by both internal and independent reviews.
The promotion is supported by national TV ads and a social media campaign that emphasize Carl’s Jr.’s message: “More meat. More flavor. More value.”
Both the Cali XL and its promotional offer are available for a limited time, with the $5.99 pricing running through January 21, 2026.
