Ore-Ida, the company known for inventing Tater Tots, has launched a new product called CrouTots; crunchy potato bites made to top salads. The idea comes from a popular trend on social media where people add fries or tots to their salads for extra flavor and crunch.
According to Ore-Ida, 77% of Americans say they now make food decisions based on online trends, making CrouTots a timely entry into a shifting food culture where the line between sides and salads is increasingly blurred.
The launch appears to be a direct response to the rise of #SaladTok, where users on TikTok are reimagining salads with unconventional toppings including adding fries or tots to their greens.
“For over 70 years, Ore-Ida has been bringing golden, crispy potatoes to tables across America,” said Casey Turro, Director of Marketing for Ore-Ida. “When we saw fans swapping croutons for Tater Tots on social media, we knew we had to make it official. With CrouTots, we’re taking that idea to the next level, giving salads a craveable potato crunch only Ore-Ida can deliver.”
The product aims to provide a new kind of salad experience, with Ore-Ida suggesting that CrouTots can be used on everything from a traditional Caesar to more elaborate recipes like spicy taco salads. The company is positioning the product as a way to make salads more appealing, especially for those who find typical greens less exciting.
“CrouTots make salads worth eating again,” Turro added. “They show that mealtime can be both fun and flavorful — even when you’re eating your vegetables.”
The brand is also leaning into its heritage as the original creator of Tater Tots, reimagining that classic product in a new form tailored for modern eating habits.
This isn’t the first time Ore-Ida has looked to reinvent how potatoes are used at the table, but it’s one of the few times the brand has ventured into crossover territory between snacks and toppings.
Starting September 30, CrouTots will be available for a limited time at $1.50 per bag. Distribution is exclusive to Gopuff and limited to five major U.S. cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh.
