Walmart to Eliminate Synthetic Dyes and Artificial Sweeteners From Its Food Products by 2027

Walmart announced Tuesday that it will eliminate synthetic dyes and 30 additional ingredients, including certain preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and fat substitutes from its private label food products across the U.S.

The changes will affect all of Walmart’s store brands, including Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and bettergoods. According to the company, the decision reflects shifting consumer preferences toward simpler and more transparent ingredient lists.

“Our customers have told us that they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients — and we’ve listened,” said John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart U.S.

Walmart cited internal survey data from July 2025 showing that 62% of its customers want more transparency about food ingredients, and more than half say they routinely check ingredient lists.

The move builds on earlier efforts to eliminate synthetic dyes from products, something Walmart says it has already done in about 90% of its private label food items.

The newly announced changes are expected to roll out gradually, with full implementation by January 2027.

Walmart is working with suppliers to reformulate products without altering taste or quality, the company said.

This marks one of the largest ingredient overhauls in private label food history, as major retailers continue to respond to growing demand for cleaner food labels.
