Denny’s Releases Limited-Edition Mug by Teen Artist to Fund Scholarships

A limited-edition mug featuring artwork by 16-year-old Texas high school student Atlas Castro is now on sale, with all proceeds supporting Denny’s national scholarship program, Hungry for Education.

Released during Hispanic Heritage Month, the mug, called Peace in Rest features a skeleton wearing a sombrero and holding a Denny’s mug, referencing Mexican folk art and inspired by the work of artist José Guadalupe Posada. Castro, who is of Hispanic heritage and the son of a Denny’s associate creative director, said the artwork is a reflection of both cultural tradition and his personal experiences.

“I wanted it to reflect the beauty and traditions that are at the heart of Hispanic heritage,” said Castro.

The $10 mug is available exclusively through the online store DinerDrip.com. Sales will benefit Hungry for Education, a Denny’s initiative launched in 2011 that has awarded over $2.7 million in scholarships to more than 650 students across the country.

Denny’s Chief Brand Officer Ellie Doty said the collaboration is especially meaningful because of its connection to the Denny’s community and its mission to support young people.

The scholarship program works with more than 30 nonprofit partners and encourages students to propose ideas that strengthen communities, alongside pursuing their own educational goals.
