7 Hospitalized in Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Home Meal Delivery Service

Health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections tied to ready-to-eat meals delivered by Metabolic Meals, a home meal service.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 16 cases have been confirmed across 10 states, with seven people requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported. The outbreak remains under investigation, and no official recall has been issued.

The illnesses have been linked to specific meals distributed during the week of July 28. Affected individuals reported eating products from Metabolic Meals shortly before becoming sick.

Consumers who have any of these meals are urged not to eat them. Officials recommend checking refrigerators and freezers and discarding affected products or contacting the company for guidance.

According to the report, Metabolic Meals has been cooperating with public health authorities and has notified affected customers directly.

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically beginning six hours to six days after infection. Most people recover without treatment within a week, but severe illness can occur in children under 5, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems.

What You Should Do:

  • Do not eat affected Metabolic Meals products while the investigation is ongoing. Check your refrigerators and freezers if you ordered these meals and throw them out or contact the company.
  • Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the affected ready-to-eat meals using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
  • Call your healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:
    • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
    • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
    • Bloody diarrhea
    • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
    • Signs of dehydration

The CDC continues to work with state health departments to trace the source of contamination and monitor new cases. Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
